ENGAGEMENT & COUPLES PHOTOGRAPHER IN BARCELONA

Analog film portraits for couples who want something that lasts longer than a holiday.

You are in Barcelona — maybe newly engaged, maybe celebrating an anniversary, maybe on a honeymoon trip that you want to remember with more than your phone. You are looking for a photographer. And you are finding pages full of the same thing: quick-turnaround digital shoots, AI-cleaned backgrounds, and photos that look interchangeable.

This is different.

I am Olya — a fine art film photographer who has lived in Barcelona for over a decade. I photograph on analog film because nothing else renders the warmth of Mediterranean stone, the softness of coastal light, or the way golden hour wraps around two people the way film does. These are not presets. This is real film — medium format, developed at one of Europe's finest labs — and the difference is something you feel the moment you see your gallery.

I work with a small number of couples. I do not rush sessions. I do not shoot dozens of clients a week. Every session begins with a conversation about you — where you are staying, what brought you to Barcelona, what kind of images matter to you — and it ends with a gallery of photographs that look like they belong in a magazine, and feel like they belong to you.

Engagement sessions from €800 — analog film, everything included.

BOOK YOUR SESSION

Summer 2026 dates are booking now — limited availability remains for June & July

WHO THIS IS FOR

Whether you just said yes, or you said it years ago

Engagement sessions — You are newly engaged and you want portraits that announce it. For save-the-dates, for your parents, for the wall. Many of my engagement couples are planning a destination wedding in Spain and want to meet me in person before the big day — this session becomes the beginning of our relationship.

Honeymoon & anniversary sessions — You are in Barcelona to celebrate. Maybe you eloped and never had professional photos. Maybe it is ten years and you want to mark it. The light and the locations are the same — the only difference is the chapter of your story.

Pre-wedding sessions — Popular with couples travelling from Asia, the US, and the Middle East. You bring a dress, sometimes two or three. I bring my knowledge of Barcelona's most extraordinary locations at their most photogenic hours. We create something editorial together.

Destination couples sessions — You are visiting Barcelona on holiday and you want photographs that are worth framing. Not tourist snapshots. Not selfies with better lighting. Real portraits, on real film, in places only a local photographer would know.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

You will not find another session like this in Barcelona.

I photograph exclusively on analog film. Every engagement and couples session is captured on medium format film — Contax 645 and Pentax 67. This is not a digital camera with a film filter applied afterwards. It is real film, real grain, real chemistry — developed and scanned at Carmencita Lab in Valencia. The result is a depth of colour, a luminosity in skin, and a quality of light that digital photography does not produce. Your photographs will not look dated in five years. They will not look dated in fifty.

I know Barcelona in a way only a decade of living here can teach. I know that the light at Pont del Bisbe hits the stone perfectly at 7:40am in May. I know that the Marimurtra gardens in Blanes are almost empty on a Tuesday morning and that the Linnaeus temple faces southeast — meaning golden hour portraits there are breathtaking. I know which streets in the Gothic Quarter catch afternoon shade and which catch warmth. I know where to go in October versus April. This is not information you get from a location guide. It is a decade of walking this city with a camera.

I send you a personalised style guide before the session. Outfit recommendations tailored to your location, the season, and the quality of light we will be working with. Soft neutral tones, flowing fabrics, timeless silhouettes — the kind of clothing that looks effortless on film and elegant twenty years from now. My couples arrive knowing they will look their best. It shows.

I guide you — gently, naturally, without stiff poses. Most of my couples have never had a professional session. Many tell me afterwards they forgot I was there. I give quiet direction — where to walk, how to hold each other, where to look — but the aim is always for the images to feel like a real moment, not a constructed one. You will recognise yourselves.

Your gallery is a curated collection, not a data dump. Every image is developed, scanned, and then individually edited by hand. I deliver a gallery of the best 50-100+ photographs — each one strong enough to print, each one part of a visual story. No duplicates, no filler, no images that exist just to inflate a number.

Engagement session Costa Brava Spain — Bianca and Elieser photographed by Olya Kobruseva

Choosing Olya to photograph our Mallorca proposal and Costa Brava engagement session was the best decision we made. She planned every detail with us from afar, kept the surprise perfect, and made us feel completely relaxed in front of the camera. The photos are romantic, natural and full of emotion — we'll treasure them forever.

HOW IT WORKS

From your first message to the images on your wall

01 — We connect Tell me about your trip — when you arrive, what you are celebrating, and any locations or ideas you have in mind. I reply within 24 hours with my honest recommendations.

02 — Your mood board and style guide arrive Two weeks before the session, you receive a personalised mood board — curated images to inspire your styling, outfits, and timing. You also receive my detailed style guide with specific outfit recommendations for your location and season. You arrive in Barcelona already confident about how the session will feel.

03 — Session day We meet at the location I have recommended — timed to the best light and the quietest moment. I guide you gently through the session. We walk, we explore, we pause in the places where the light is extraordinary. You barely notice the camera. That is when the best photographs happen.

04 — Your gallery Every image is developed and scanned at Carmencita Lab before I begin my own editing process. Your private gallery — 50 to 100+ fine art images — arrives within two weeks. Each one ready to print, ready to share, ready to frame.

WHERE I PHOTOGRAPH

Barcelona, Costa Brava & beyond — through the eyes of someone who lives here

GOTHIC QUARTER The Barri Gòtic at sunrise is one of the most extraordinary places in Europe to photograph a couple. Before the cafés open and the tourists arrive, the medieval streets are completely empty — ancient stone, directional morning light filtering through narrow passages, hidden courtyards entirely to yourselves. The Pont del Bisbe, Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, the quieter streets behind the Cathedral — I know exactly where the light falls at every hour. This is my most requested engagement location, and it never disappoints on film. Best time: Sunrise, any day. Weekday mornings are the quietest.

PARK GUËLL Gaudí's mosaic terraces with panoramic views over Barcelona and the Mediterranean. The serpentine bench, the Hypostyle Hall columns, the winding garden paths of the free zone — all of it photographs beautifully on medium format film. The key is arriving at the very first entry slot, before the tour groups arrive. At that hour the monumental area feels almost entirely yours. Best time: First entry slot at opening. Book tickets in advance. See a Park Güell engagement session →

LABYRINTH OF HORTA Barcelona's most beautiful secret. An 18th-century neoclassical garden with a cypress maze, sculpted hedgerows, classical statues, and a stillness that feels completely removed from the city. Almost no tourists, extraordinary architecture, and the kind of dappled Mediterranean light that analog film renders perfectly. If you want something genuinely different from the usual Barcelona backdrops — this is my first recommendation. Best time: Weekday morning, spring or autumn.

EL BORN & SANTA MARIA DEL MAR Less visited than the Gothic Quarter but equally beautiful — cobblestone streets, iron balconies, the extraordinary Gothic facade of Santa Maria del Mar. El Born has a quieter, more intimate atmosphere that suits couples who want something elegant without the drama of the Gothic Quarter. Best time: Early morning, any day.

MONTJUÏC The gardens of Montjuïc offer sweeping views over the city and port, with the National Art Museum (MNAC) staircase providing one of the most cinematic backdrops in Barcelona. At golden hour the whole hillside turns amber. Ideal for couples who want grand, architectural images with the whole city behind them. Best time: Two hours before sunset.

BEYOND BARCELONA: COSTA BRAVA & MALLORCA

Some of my finest engagement work has happened outside Barcelona entirely. If you're visiting Spain or planning a session around a trip, these are the locations I return to most.

CADAQUES, COSTA BRAVA  The whitewashed fishing village where Salvador Dalí chose to live and work. Narrow streets tumbling down to a turquoise harbour, fishing boats, the scent of the sea — Cadaqués has an intimacy and artistic atmosphere that is completely unlike anywhere else on the Costa Brava. One of my favourite locations for couples who want their images to feel timeless and painterly. See a Cadaqués engagement session

SITGES Just 35 kilometres from Barcelona, Sitges is one of the most beautiful places in Spain for an engagement session — and one I return to again and again. The 17th-century church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla at the edge of the cliffs, the whitewashed old town, the seafront promenade curving along the bay. Because the coast faces south-southwest, the setting sun illuminates both the facades of the old town and the surface of the water simultaneously — a quality of light that analog film captures better than anything else. See a Sitges engagement session

MARIMURTRA BOTANICAL GARDEN, BLANES  A clifftop garden above the sea with ancient cypress-lined paths, a stunning Linnaeus temple, and Mediterranean views that feel like another century. One of the most beautiful and privately quiet locations I have ever scouted — on a weekday morning you may have entire sections entirely to yourselves. See a Marimurtra engagement session

GARDENS OF SANTA CLOTILDE, LLORET DE MAR Italian Renaissance gardens cascading in stone terraces toward the sea — cypress trees, classical sculptures, and a stillness that feels completely removed from the modern world. One of the Costa Brava's most beautiful and least-known locations. See a Santa Clotilde session →

MALLORCA  Clifftop sessions above the sea at Son Marroig, golden hour portraits in the olive groves of Deia, sailboat sessions at sunset in Port de Sóller. Mallorca has a quality of light and romance that analog film was made for. I travel to the island regularly and know its locations intimately.

SEVILLE, TOLEDO & BEYOND  I have photographed engagement sessions across Spain — the Real Alcázar gardens in Seville, the clifftop streets of Toledo, the Alhambra gardens in Granada. If your trip takes you somewhere extraordinary, get in touch and I will tell you exactly what is possible.

FROM SESSION TO WEDDING

If you are also planning a wedding in Spain, ask me about crediting your engagement session investment toward a wedding collection. Many of my couples first meet me through an engagement session — it is the best way to build a relationship before your wedding day.

The engagement session is included complimentary in the Mediterranean and Destination Europe wedding collections.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How is this different from other couples photographers in Barcelona?

Most couples photographers in Barcelona work digitally, often shooting dozens of sessions per week on the same routes. I work exclusively on analog film, I take a limited number of sessions each month, and I spend real time understanding the light at your specific location before the day. My couples receive fine art images developed at a professional European lab — not AI-processed files delivered the same afternoon. If you are looking for quick digital snapshots, there are many options in Barcelona. If you want photographs with the depth and permanence of film, I would love to hear from you.

We are not used to being photographed. Will we feel awkward?

Almost every couple I work with says this before the session and says the opposite afterwards. I guide you with gentle, minimal direction — walking together, pausing naturally, looking at each other. There are no stiff poses, no "look here and smile" instructions. Within ten minutes you forget I am there. That is the whole point.

What should we wear?

You receive a personalised style guide after booking. In general: timeless, elegant clothing in soft neutral tones — creams, whites, light blues, sage, blush. Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully on film. Avoid busy patterns, logos, bright colours, and anything you would not wear in twenty years. The Premium collection encourages 2–3 outfit changes — I help you plan which outfit suits which location.

When is the best time of year for a session in Barcelona?

Barcelona is beautiful year-round. Spring (March–May) offers soft light, blooming gardens, and fewer tourists. Autumn (September–November) has warm golden tones and comfortable temperatures. Summer is gorgeous but hotter — I schedule summer sessions at sunrise or late afternoon. Winter (December–February) is quiet, intimate, and the light can be extraordinary.

Can we do an engagement session and a proposal on the same trip?

Absolutely — and many couples do. We can plan a surprise proposal for one day and a relaxed engagement session for another. I offer a combined rate when booking both together. Ask me about this when you enquire.

Do you work with pre-wedding couples from Asia?

Yes — I have extensive experience photographing pre-wedding sessions for couples travelling from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. I understand the specific expectations around styling, outfit changes, and editorial-quality imagery. Barcelona is an extraordinary destination for pre-wedding photography, and I know exactly which locations deliver the most dramatic results.

What is the booking process?

Send me a message with your dates and your vision. I reply within 24 hours. To secure your session, a 50% retainer and signed agreement are required — the retainer is fully applied to your collection investment. Balance is due 7 days before the session.
