Sitges has a quality of light I have not found anywhere else on the Spanish coast. It arrives slowly in the evening, turns the whitewashed walls amber, and stays just long enough to make everything feel like it was always meant to look this way. It is one of my favourite places to photograph couples — and one of the most beautiful settings in all of Spain for an engagement session.
I am Olya Kobruseva, a fine art film wedding and engagement photographer based in Barcelona. I shoot on medium format analog film — Kodak Portra 400 and 800, developed at Carmencita Film Lab — and I travel across Spain and Europe for couples who want photographs that feel warm, timeless, and genuinely theirs. Sitges, just 35 kilometres from Barcelona, is a location I return to again and again.
Why I love photographing engagement sessions in Sitges
As a Barcelona-based film photographer, Sitges is close enough to reach in under an hour — but it feels like a world apart from the city. The old town is intimate and unhurried. The seafront promenade curves gently along the bay. The 17th-century Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla stands at the edge of the cliffs, framed by open sky and the Mediterranean below.
What makes Sitges exceptional for engagement photography is the light. Because the seafront faces south-southwest, the setting sun illuminates both the facades of the old town and the surface of the water at the same time. No reflectors, no flash — just the natural, warm glow that analog film captures better than anything else. In spring, golden hour arrives around 7:30 to 8:30 in the evening, giving us a long and generous window to work in.
I have photographed couples in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, along the Costa Brava, in Mallorca, Andalusia, and across Southern Europe. Sitges holds its own against every one of them — and for couples visiting Barcelona, it makes a perfect half-day escape that produces some of the most beautiful images I have ever made on film.
What to expect from your engagement session with me
My approach is relaxed and documentary. I do not direct couples into poses — I guide you through movement, keep the conversation easy, and photograph the moments in between. Most people feel a little self-conscious at the start of a session. By the time we reach the seafront, they have usually forgotten I am there entirely. That is when the real photographs happen.
A golden hour session in Sitges lasts around two hours. We typically begin in the narrow streets of the Barri Vell, where the old stone walls and architecture give us texture and depth. From there we move toward the sea — the promenade, the church steps, the rocks below the cliffs — following the light as it drops toward the horizon and shifts from gold to rose.
Everything is shot on film. You will receive a curated gallery of fully edited, scanned film images — soft, warm, and timeless in a way that only analog photography can produce. This is the same standard of work featured in Style Me Pretty, Wedding Sparrow, and French Wedding Style.

Frequently asked questions — Sitges engagement photographer
Do you photograph engagement sessions in Sitges?
Yes — Sitges is one of my favourite locations for couples photography near Barcelona. The old town, the seafront, and the golden hour light make it one of the most beautiful places in Spain for an engagement session. I offer dedicated Sitges engagement shoots, which can easily be combined with a Barcelona trip.
What is your photography style?
I photograph in a relaxed, documentary style on medium format analog film — Kodak Portra 400 and 800. My images are warm, soft, and editorial, shaped entirely by natural available light. No flash, no artificial lighting. Every session is different because every couple and every light is different.
When is the best time of year for a Sitges engagement session?
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best seasons. The light is warm, the temperatures are comfortable, and the town is quieter than peak summer. In spring, golden hour in Sitges arrives around 7:30 to 8:30 in the evening — a long, beautiful window for photography on film.
How far in advance should I book?
At least 1 to 3 months in advance, especially for spring and autumn sessions. I have limited availability for 2026 engagement sessions — if you have a trip to Barcelona or Sitges planned, please reach out as early as possible.
Do you travel for engagement sessions outside of Sitges and Barcelona?
Absolutely. I travel across Spain and Europe for couples sessions — Mallorca, Andalusia, Seville, the South of France, Portugal, Italy, and beyond. If you are planning a destination engagement session anywhere in Europe, I would love to hear about it.
