SURPRISE PROPOSAL PHOTOGRAPHER IN BARCELONA, COSTA BRAVA & SPAIN
You've planned everything. Let me take care of the rest.
You know where. You know when. You've been carrying the ring for weeks. The one thing left is making sure someone is there — invisibly, perfectly positioned — to capture the moment she says yes.
I'm Olya. I'm a film photographer based in Barcelona with over a decade of experience photographing real moments across Spain and the Costa Brava. I know this region's light, its hidden gardens, its medieval bridges, its clifftop chapels, and exactly where to stand so you never know I'm there.
She won't see me. You won't need to think about me. And when it happens — the surprise, the tears, the yes — every real emotion will be on analog film.
Spring and summer 2026 dates are limited — the sooner we connect, the more we can plan together.
HOW IT WORKS
I've done this many times and I take care of everything on my end — so on the day, you only need to focus on her.
1. TELL ME YOUR IDEA Send me a message with your date, a rough sense of the location, and how you're imagining the moment. No need for a finished plan — that's what we work out together.
2. WE PLAN IT PROPERLY I know every location I work with at every hour of the day — the light, the crowds, the exact spot where the moment will feel private and look extraordinary. I'll tell you precisely where to stand, what time to arrive, and how I'll position myself. We agree on a simple visual cue so I recognise you without any coordination on the day.
3. THE DAY ITSELF I arrive first. I'm already in position — a tourist, a photographer passing through, someone sitting nearby with a camera. When you reach for the ring, every real emotion is already in my frame. You don't think about me once.
4. AFTER THE YES We spend an hour together as newly engaged — a short portrait session while the joy is still completely raw. These are often the most natural and beautiful images I ever make.
5. YOUR GALLERY Every image is developed and scanned at a professional European lab before I begin editing — this is what gives the photographs their depth and quality. Your gallery arrives within two weeks.
Kind Words
Olya didn't just photograph the proposal — she helped me plan everything. From finding the perfect spot at Château de la Chèvre d'Or to guiding me on timing and how to make it feel natural, she thought of everything. Hannah had no idea. The photos are incredible — you can see the real surprise, the real tears. I couldn't have pulled it off without her.

WHERE I PHOTOGRAPH PROPOSALS
I work across Barcelona, the Costa Brava, inland Catalonia, and beyond. These are the locations I return to most — and why each one works specifically for a surprise proposal.
Looking for something more private? I also work with a selection of Barcelona hotel terraces with extraordinary city views — perfect for a fully private proposal with no crowds, at any hour. These require an additional venue fee; get in touch and I'll recommend the right one for you.
The Gothic Quarter, Barcelona
My most requested proposal location — and for good reason.
The Barri Gòtic is a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets, hidden courtyards, and centuries-old stone that feels removed from the modern city entirely. At sunrise — before the cafés open and the tourists arrive — the streets are almost empty. The low morning light filters through the ancient passages in a way that film renders extraordinarily: warm, directional, full of shadow and depth.
For a proposal, the Gothic Quarter offers something no other Barcelona location can — natural, effortless intimacy. The narrow streets mean I can position myself around a corner, completely invisible, while you walk through one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The Pont del Bisbe, Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, the quieter streets behind the Cathedral — I know exactly where each works best depending on the time and the light.
Best time: Sunrise, any day. Weekday mornings are the quietest.
Park Güell, Barcelona
Iconic Gaudí — at its most extraordinary before the crowds arrive.
The mosaic terraces, the sweeping city views, the Mediterranean in the distance — Park Güell is one of the most visually extraordinary places in Europe. The key, as with so much in Barcelona, is timing. I recommend the very first entry slot at opening. At that hour the serpentine bench, the Hypostyle Hall columns, and the panoramic terrace feel almost entirely yours. The free zones surrounding the monumental area also offer winding garden paths and quiet viewpoints that work beautifully for a more relaxed, unhurried approach.
Best time: First entry slot at opening or last hour of opening.
Marimurtra Botanical Garden, Blanes
Cliffside gardens above the sea — my most enthusiastic recommendation.
Perched above the Costa Brava in Blanes, Marimurtra is the location I recommend most warmly to couples who want their proposal to feel completely removed from the ordinary world. Ancient cypress-lined paths, a clifftop Linnaeus temple with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, warm stone terraces, and over 4,000 plant species in a setting that feels like another century.
On a weekday morning you may have entire sections of the garden almost entirely to yourselves. The elevated terraces offer natural privacy for the proposal moment, and the sea below provides a backdrop that is simply breathtaking. I discovered Marimurtra while scouting and knew immediately it was rare — the scale, the intimacy, the quality of Mediterranean light on stone and water. Film renders it beautifully.
Best time: Morning in spring or early autumn — the garden is in bloom and the light is at its finest. One hour from Barcelona by car. I handle all session logistics. Please note that Marimurtra charges a photography fee for professional sessions — I help to handle all permits and logistics for my clients as part of the booking.
Gardens of Santa Clotilde, Lloret de Mar
Italian Renaissance gardens cascading toward the Mediterranean.
Designed in the early 20th century in the style of Italian Renaissance gardens, Santa Clotilde descends in terraced stone staircases toward the sea — cypress trees, classical sculptures, sea views, and an atmosphere of complete stillness. It is dramatic without being overwhelming, and private in a way that Barcelona locations simply cannot be.
The lower terraces look directly out over the Costa Brava coast. The upper paths wind between sculpted hedgerows and offer hidden corners that feel entirely your own.
For a proposal with architecture, poetry, and the Mediterranean as a backdrop — there is nowhere quite like it.
Best time: Morning on a weekday. Quiet, soft-lit, unhurried. One hour from Barcelona by car.
BEYOND BARCELONA — PROPOSALS ACROSS SPAIN & EUROPE
Some of the most extraordinary proposal moments I have photographed have happened far outside Barcelona. If your story takes you somewhere else — I will be there.
Mallorca Clifftop proposals at Son Marroig above the sea, sailboat proposals at sunset in Port de Sóller, intimate moments in the ancient olive groves of Deia. Mallorca has a quality of light and a sense of romance that is almost impossible to describe — and analog film renders it better than anything else. I travel to Mallorca regularly throughout the season and know the island's locations, light, and timing intimately. See a Mallorca sunset sailboat proposal
Alhambra, Granada The Nasrid Palaces at dawn — before the first tour group arrives — are one of the most breathtaking proposal settings in Europe. Intricate Moorish geometry, ancient reflecting pools, and a stillness that feels like another world. I handle all professional photography permits for the Alhambra as part of the booking, so you arrive with nothing to organise and everything already in place.
Seville The Real Alcázar gardens, the Plaza de España at golden hour, the rooftop terraces of the old city overlooking the Giralda. Seville rewards couples who are willing to start early — the light in the hour after sunrise here is extraordinary, and the most iconic locations are completely empty. I know exactly when and where.
Portofino & the Italian Riviera The harbour at Portofino, the clifftop villages of the Cinque Terre, the terraced lemon gardens above the Amalfi Coast. Italy offers proposal settings of almost painful beauty — and the Mediterranean light that analog film was made for. Travel from Barcelona is straightforward; logistics are handled entirely on my end. See Portofino Proposal
Provence & the French Riviera Lavender fields at dusk, the clifftop villages of the Luberon, the terraces of Èze above the sea. I photograph regularly across the south of France — from intimate countryside proposals to luxury clifftop moments at venues like Château de la Chèvre d'Or on the French Riviera. See a French Riviera proposal.
Anywhere else you're imagining Amsterdam, Lisbon, Santorini, Dubrovnik, the Scottish Highlands — if the location moves you, get in touch. I will tell you honestly whether I know it well, what the light does there, and how we make it work.

Things you're probably wondering
Will she know you're there?
Never. I arrive before you, position myself naturally — as a tourist, a photographer, someone sitting nearby — and we agree on a simple visual cue in advance. By the time you reach for the ring, I've been watching and waiting for several minutes. She has no idea.
Can you help me choose the location? Absolutely — this is one of the most important things I do. Tell me a little about her: city or nature? Architecture or coastline? The drama of a clifftop lighthouse or the intimacy of a medieval street? I'll give you my honest recommendation based on what I know about each location at different times of day and year.
How far in advance do I need to book? At least two to three weeks, ideally more for spring and summer. The earlier we connect, the more carefully we can plan — location, timing, light, logistics. Last-minute proposals are sometimes possible; get in touch and I'll tell you honestly what's available.
What if something changes on the day? It happens — and it's fine. Flights are delayed, the moment doesn't feel right, plans shift. I'm flexible and experienced. We can adjust timing, location, or the whole approach right up to the last moment. The plan exists to serve the moment, not the other way around.
Can we do an engagement session the same day? Yes, and I'd encourage it. After the proposal you're both glowing — the joy is completely real and completely alive. Spending another hour in beautiful light, now as newly engaged, produces some of the most natural portraits I ever make. We can plan this in advance or decide on the day.
Do you travel outside Barcelona? Yes — throughout Spain and Europe. Travel within Catalonia is included. For locations further afield, get in touch with your date and destination and I'll let you know what's possible.
Many of my proposal clients go on to book their engagement session or wedding with me — and I love when that happens. If you're also planning your engagement session or looking for a wedding photographer in Barcelona or Mallorca, I'd be happy to talk through the full picture together.
