A SUNSET PROPOSAL ON THE WATER IN PORT DE SÓLLER
Port de Sóller is one of my favourite places in Mallorca. The horseshoe bay, the Tramuntana rising behind it, the old wooden fishing boats bobbing in the harbour — it's the kind of place that already feels like a love story before anything's happened yet. I've photographed here many times, and the light in the hour before sunset is some of the most beautiful I've found anywhere in Spain.
So when I got the call about a surprise proposal on a sailboat at golden hour, I knew exactly what we were working with. And I knew it was going to be extraordinary on film.

THE PROPOSAL
We planned everything with the team at Perfect Charter, who were wonderful — their boats are beautiful and the crew knows how to make the evening feel effortless. I boarded early, found my spot, and waited.
The couple arrived at the marina and we sailed out into the bay. They were dressed in soft blues and white — without knowing it, they matched the sea and the sky perfectly. The Tramuntana was behind us, the sun was dropping, and the water was doing that thing it does here where it turns every shade of turquoise at once.
He led her to the bow of the boat as the golden hour deepened. I was shooting on my Contax 645 loaded with Kodak Portra 400 — the warmest, softest film stock I have, and exactly right for this light. He got down on one knee. She said yes. And I pressed the shutter as quietly as I could, because some moments don't need a photographer to be visible. They just need to be recorded.
The light after the proposal was extraordinary — that last twenty minutes before sunset where everything goes deep gold and the shadows stretch long across the water. We kept sailing. They kept holding each other. I kept shooting. Some of my favourite frames from the whole session came from these minutes — the ones where nobody was performing anything, they were just happy and the light was doing the rest.
AFTER THE YES — PORTRAITS ON THE WATER
After the proposal, we moved into a relaxed portrait session on the sailboat. This is what I always include with surprise proposals — once the adrenaline settles, the real joy comes through. They were laughing, leaning against each other, completely relaxed in the way people are when something enormous has just happened and they're still catching up with it.
I love shooting couple portraits on boats because the light wraps around you from every direction — reflecting off the water, bouncing off the sails, falling directly from the sky. On film, this creates a softness and warmth that's almost impossible to achieve on land. The grain of the Portra, the gentle motion of the boat, the sound of the water — it all comes through in the images somehow. They feel alive.
As the sun set behind the Tramuntana and the sky turned pink and then deep blue, we sailed back into the harbour. The mountains were dark shapes against the sky, the harbour lights had come on, and the two of them were sitting together at the stern with their feet up, not saying much. I shot the last few frames on what was left of the light and put the camera down.
One of those evenings you don't forget.
WHY PORT DE SÓLLER FOR A PROPOSAL
I recommend Port de Sóller for sailboat proposals because the bay faces west — which means the entire golden hour and sunset happen directly in front of you, over the open water, with the mountains framing everything. The light is warm and consistent for about an hour, which gives us plenty of time to capture both the proposal moment and a full portrait session afterwards.
The harbour itself is charming — old wooden boats, a few restaurants along the waterfront, the historic tram running along the promenade. It's the kind of place where you can celebrate with dinner afterwards and walk along the water as the evening settles in.
I work closely with Perfect Charter for sailboat proposals in Mallorca. Their boats are well-maintained and elegant, and their crew understand that discretion is everything — they keep the atmosphere calm and romantic so the moment feels private, even though we're all on the same boat.
FILM PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE WATER
Shooting on a sailboat is one of the more technically demanding things I do as a film photographer — the boat moves, the light changes constantly, and you can't ask anyone to hold still for very long. But medium format film handles it beautifully. The larger negative gives me more latitude with exposure, which means I can work fast in changing light without losing the warmth and depth in the image.
I shoot sailboat sessions on Kodak Portra 400 — it's fast enough for the shifting conditions but still gives me that soft, golden quality that makes skin tones glow. The natural grain of the film adds texture that suits the movement of the water. Everything processed at Carmencita Film Lab in Valencia, as always.
For couples who want something even more cinematic, I also offer Super 8 video for sailboat proposals and sessions. The motion of the boat, the wind in the sails, the sparkle of the water — Super 8 captures all of this with a warmth and nostalgia that feels like watching your own love story in a film. I'm the only photographer in Mallorca offering medium format stills paired with Super 8 video.
PLANNING A SURPRISE PROPOSAL IN MALLORCA
If you're thinking about proposing in Mallorca, here's how I work:
We start with a phone or video call — just the two of us — to talk through what you're imagining. I'll help you choose the location, the time of day, and the logistics. I've done sailboat proposals, clifftop proposals at Son Marroig, garden proposals at private fincas — each one is different and I plan around what feels right for you as a couple.
On the day, I arrive early and position myself so I'm invisible until the moment happens. For sailboat proposals, I'm already on board when you arrive — the crew introduces me as part of the charter experience so there's no suspicion. After the proposal, we transition naturally into a relaxed engagement portrait session.
You'll receive both the raw, real proposal images and the composed, beautiful portraits — the surprise and the celebration, all on film.
