Film photography for couples and proposals in the most beautiful village on the Costa Brava
Cadaqués is the most beautiful village on the Costa Brava — and one of the best locations in all of Spain for an engagement session or surprise proposal. Salvador Dalí chose to spend his life here for a reason: the whitewashed houses curving around the still bay, the clear Mediterranean light, the rocky headland rising above the town. It photographs on film with an intimacy and timelessness that is unlike anywhere else near Barcelona.
I'm Olya Kobruseva, a film photographer based in Barcelona. Cadaqués is one of the locations I return to most on the Costa Brava — both for its extraordinary beauty and for the privacy it offers couples. Unlike the busier spots closer to the city, Cadaqués remains quiet and unhurried, which means you have the streets, the harbour, and the coastline almost entirely to yourselves.
My favourite locations within Cadaqués for couples include the old town waterfront and its painted fishing boats at early morning; the rocky coastal path north of the village, with views back over the white houses and the bay; and the narrow lanes of the historic centre, where the light falls between the buildings at angles that make my Pentax 645 sing.
Cadaqués is approximately two hours from Barcelona by car — the drive along the Cap de Creus peninsula alone is worth the journey. I recommend combining a session here with an overnight stay, arriving the evening before so you can begin shooting at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive.
I shoot Cadaqués on Kodak Portra 400 — the white buildings bounce light everywhere, which means even in the shaded lanes the quality is soft and luminous. On Portra, the blues of the bay against the whitewashed walls produce something almost painterly. Everything is processed at Carmencita Film Lab in Valencia. The results from Cadaqués sessions are consistently some of the most beautiful in my portfolio — there's something about this village and this film stock that just works together.
If you are planning a proposal, engagement session, or honeymoon shoot on the Costa Brava — I would love to help you plan it.
Practical Information — Cadaqués Engagement Sessions
Getting there: Cadaqués is approximately 1.5 hours from Barcelona by car. There is no direct train — the nearest station is Figueres, with a connecting bus to Cadaqués. I recommend driving or arranging a private transfer, as the road into the village is part of the experience.
Best time to shoot: Early morning — before 10am — for the softest light and the quietest streets. Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal for light and atmosphere. Summer works too but requires an earlier start. If you're coming in summer, I also recommend late afternoon sessions — the light in Cadaqués from about 6pm onwards has a warmth and softness that's extraordinary on film, and the village starts to empty as day visitors head back to their hotels.
Where to stay: I recommend spending at least one night in Cadaqués — the village is entirely different once the day visitors leave, and the evening light over the bay is extraordinary. Hotel Playa Sol and Hotel Llane Petit are both well placed for the harbour.
Sessions start from €800 and include full location planning, 2 hours on film, and a professional analog gallery delivered digitally. Travel from Barcelona is included.
Frequently Asked Questions — Cadaqués Engagement Photography
Q: How far is Cadaqués from Barcelona?
A: Approximately 1.5 hours by car. I drive from Barcelona for all Cadaqués sessions — travel is included in every booking.
Q: Can you photograph a surprise proposal in Cadaqués?
A: Yes — Cadaqués is a wonderful proposal location. The harbour at sunrise, the rocky Cap de Creus headland nearby, the terrace of the Dalí House — all offer extraordinary settings for a surprise proposal. I position myself discreetly and document everything from the first moment. Get in touch early as these sessions require advance planning.
Q: What is the best season for an engagement session in Cadaqués?
A: April, May and September are my favourite months — warm light, calm sea, and far fewer visitors than summer. June and October are also excellent. I am available year-round.
Q: Do you shoot on film or digital?
A: Entirely on analog film — Contax 645 (medium format) and 35mm. Every session is captured on Kodak Portra, professionally scanned by Carmencita Film Lab, and delivered as high-resolution digital files.
Q: How far in advance should I book?
A: Spring and autumn dates book 6–8 weeks in advance. Summer dates move faster — I recommend reaching out as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Q: Can I combine Cadaqués with other Costa Brava locations in the same session? A: Yes — depending on timing and light, I can combine Cadaqués with nearby locations such as Cap de Creus, the port of Llançà, or hidden beach nearby. Get in touch and we'll plan the perfect Costa Brava day together.
READY TO CREATE YOUR CADAQUÉS LOVE STORY?
Cadaqués is one of those places where I put the camera down for a moment, look around, and think — this is why I do this. The light, the stillness, the white buildings reflected in that impossibly clear bay. Every time I drive back to Barcelona after a session here, the images are already developing in my mind before they've been developed at the lab.
If you're planning a trip to the Costa Brava and want to come home with something more beautiful than phone photos — or if you're thinking of proposing somewhere truly unforgettable — I'd love to help you plan it.
Exploring More of the Costa Brava
If Cadaqués captures your heart, the Costa Brava has even more to offer. Just an hour south, Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes is another extraordinary engagement location — a clifftop garden with ancient cypress paths, a stunning temple overlooking the Mediterranean, and a sense of complete privacy that is rare to find.
