Marimurtra, Blanes — Costa Brava's Most Beautiful Proposal Location
Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes is one of the most extraordinary locations I have ever photographed — and one of the least known among international couples visiting Spain. Perched on cliffs above the Costa Brava, the garden combines ancient cypress-lined paths, a clifftop Linnaeus temple with sweeping Mediterranean views, and over 4,000 plant species in a setting that feels completely removed from the modern world.
I first discovered Marimurtra while scouting locations outside Barcelona, and I knew immediately it was something special. The scale and intimacy of the garden, the quality of light at different hours, the warm stone architecture against the deep blue sea — it creates photographic conditions I simply cannot replicate anywhere in the city.
For proposals, Marimurtra is genuinely ideal. The elevated terraces and enclosed paths offer natural privacy — and the drama of the cliffside backdrop means the proposal moment is captured against one of the most beautiful Mediterranean views imaginable. On a weekday morning you may have entire sections of the garden almost entirely to yourselves.
Film Photography: Capturing Timeless Romance on the Costa Brava
I shoot all my engagement sessions on a combination of analog film and digital — and Marimurtra is a location where the difference film makes is impossible to ignore. The warm stone of the terraces, the deep blue of the Mediterranean, the soft green of the cypress paths — film renders these tones with a luminosity and depth that digital cameras simply cannot match.
Shooting on film also changes how I work. Every frame is a considered decision — there is no spray-and-pray. This intentional approach creates a session that feels calm, focused, and genuinely present. Couples tell me consistently that they barely noticed me. And the images carry that quality — they look like moments that were lived, not poses that were performed.
Marimurtra in spring and early autumn offers the best conditions: soft directional light, the garden in full bloom, and far fewer visitors than summer. Sessions typically run 2-3 hours covering the full garden — from the entrance cypress avenue to the clifftop Linnaeus temple — and I always time the end to coincide with golden hour overlooking the sea.
