A PROPOSAL AT CHÂTEAU DE LA CHÈVRE D'OR, ÈZE — FRENCH RIVIERA PROPOSAL PHOTOGRAPHER

Proposal photographer on the French Riviera | Analog film photography

There are places in the world that make a proposal feel inevitable. Where the setting is so overwhelmingly beautiful that the moment becomes something more than a question — it becomes a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Èze is one of those places.

Perched 430 metres above the Mediterranean on a sheer cliff face, this medieval hilltop village on the French Riviera has been making people fall in love for centuries. And when M & H chose the terrace of Château de la Chèvre d'Or as the place to propose, I understood immediately why.

The Proposal

He planned everything. She had absolutely no idea.

The terrace at Château de la Chèvre d'Or sits directly above the sea, with the coastline curving away in both directions below — the deep blue of the Mediterranean stretching all the way to the horizon, the hills of the Riviera rising behind. When the light is right, the whole world seems to glow.

I arrived early and found my position before they did. When Marcus got down on one knee, I was already there — discreet, invisible, camera ready. What happened in the next few seconds was exactly what this kind of photography exists to capture: the real moment, unposed and unplanned, before she even realised there was a photographer present.

The tears. The joy. The champagne toast overlooking the sea.

"Thank you for capturing the best day of my life." — Hannah, after seeing the gallery

Why Èze for a Proposal?

After a decade of photographing proposals across Europe — Barcelona, Mallorca, the Amalfi Coast, Portofino — Èze sits in a category of its own for a very specific reason: the combination of altitude, light, and intimacy is almost impossible to find anywhere else on the Riviera.

The village itself is car-free and quiet, even in season. The Château de la Chèvre d'Or is a private terrace rather than a public viewpoint, which means no strangers walking through your moment. And the quality of light above the sea at midday — when the Mediterranean turns that impossible shade of blue — is extraordinary on film.

For a surprise proposal, these details matter enormously.

Best time of day: Mid-morning to noon for that deep Mediterranean blue. Late afternoon for warmer, golden tones.

Best season: Spring and early autumn — warm, clear skies, and the light is at its most luminous. Summer works beautifully but the village is busier.

The logistics: I help you coordinate everything — where to meet, how to approach the terrace, what signals to use so we recognise each other without your partner noticing. You receive a detailed plan with maps, timing, and a step-by-step timeline. On the day, you focus entirely on her.

Shooting on Film in Èze

Every session I shoot — proposals, engagements, weddings — is captured on medium format analog film. Contax 645 and Pentax 67.

The reason isn't nostalgia. It's what film does to light.

The Mediterranean palette — deep blue sea, pale stone, warm terracotta, the soft green of olive trees — comes alive on film in a way that digital simply cannot replicate. The colours feel real. The shadows have depth. And the images, when you look at them in ten or twenty years, will feel like heirlooms rather than photographs.

This proposal gallery — the terrace, the sea, the moment — is exactly what film was made for.

Beyond Èze: Other French Riviera Proposal Locations

Èze is my personal favourite, but the Riviera offers extraordinary options depending on what you're imagining:

Villefranche-sur-Mer — A sheltered bay with a fishing village, pastel-coloured harbour, and one of the most beautiful anchorages in the Mediterranean. Quieter than Nice, more intimate than Cannes.

Cap Ferrat — The peninsula between Nice and Monaco. Private gardens, clifftop paths, extraordinary sea views. For couples who want total privacy.

Monaco old town — For a proposal with drama and grandeur. The Palace Square at golden hour is breathtaking on film.

Antibes ramparts — Medieval walls above the sea, with the Alps visible on clear days. Less discovered than the other spots, and the light is remarkable.

If you have a specific vision — a private terrace, a boat, a restaurant with a view — I can help you find the right location and make it happen.

How a Surprise Proposal Session Works

Before the day: We connect by email or WhatsApp to plan every detail. Location, timing, crowd levels, light, logistics, visual signals, backup plans. You receive maps, meeting point photos, and a step-by-step timeline. I think of everything so you don't have to.

The moment: I arrive early and position myself discreetly before you do. I'm there before you walk in — invisible to your partner, completely present for the moment. I capture the approach, the proposal, the reaction, and the emotion that follows.

After "yes": Once the surprise is out, I introduce myself and we move into a relaxed 30–60 minute couples session at the same location or nearby. You'll have both the raw real moment and the composed, beautiful portraits — the ring detail, the embraces, the joy.

Delivery: Your full gallery of professionally edited film images is delivered within 2 weeks via a private online gallery.

Plan Your French Riviera Proposal

I'm based in Barcelona and travel regularly to the South of France for proposals, engagements, and elopements. French Riviera sessions are available year-round, with spring and early autumn being the most popular months.

If you're planning a proposal in Èze, Nice, Villefranche, Monaco or anywhere along the Côte d'Azur — I'd love to hear what you're imagining.
