There is a moment — usually somewhere between the orange trees of Seville and the Moorish arches of the Alhambra — when couples look at me and say 'why didn't we come here sooner?'
Andalusia does something to people. It slows everything down. The light is golden and warm, the streets are ancient and alive, and there is a romance in the air that feels completely effortless to photograph. I travel from Barcelona to Andalucia regularly for engagement sessions, proposals, and intimate elopements — and it remains one of my absolute favourite places to shoot in all of Europe.
This is my honest guide to weddings and elopements in Andalusia: the locations I love, the venues I know, and why I believe it produces some of the most timeless photography you can find anywhere in Spain.
WHY ANDALUSIA FOR YOUR WEDDING OR ELOPEMENT
Most engagement sessions happen close to home. Which makes complete sense — but it also means they look like everyone else's.
Couples who come to Seville or Granada for their session walk away with something different. There is no other place in Europe where you get this combination: Moorish palace walls worn smooth by centuries, bougainvillea spilling over whitewashed facades, cobblestone streets that empty out at dawn, and a quality of natural light that film photographers dream about.
Beyond the aesthetics, shooting in South of Spain simply feels different. You are not squeezing a session between meetings or rushing home to let the dog out. You are already travelling together, already present, already romantic. That shows in every frame.
I shoot all my Andalucia sessions on analogue film — Contax 645 loaded with Kodak Portra 400. The golden tones of Andalusia and the warmth of Portra are so naturally aligned that I barely need to think about colour — the film and the light do the work together. Carmencita Film Lab processes everything. The results are some of the richest, warmest images in my entire portfolio.
SEVILLE — WEDDINGS, ELOPEMENTS & PROPOSALS IN ANDALUSIA'S MOST ROMANTIC CITY
Seville is, without question, the most photographically rich city in Spain for intimate couple sessions. I have shot here many times and I still find new corners every visit.
The city rewards early risers. At 7am, Plaza de España belongs entirely to you and the pigeons. The light rakes low across the painted ceramic tiles, the fountain catches gold, and the crescent-shaped colonnade creates a natural frame that you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. This is where I start almost every Seville session.
My Favourite Locations in Seville for Weddings & Elopements
PLAZA DE ESPAÑA — The obvious choice, and obvious for very good reason. The scale, the tiles, the bridges, the water — it is one of the most beautiful public spaces in Europe. Avoid midday when tour groups arrive. Early morning or the last hour of light are the only times to shoot here.
REAL ALCAZAR GARDENS — The Royal Palace gardens are layered, intimate and genuinely magical. Tiled archways, fountains hidden around corners, and dense gardens that create pockets of deep shade and filtered light. This is where I go when I want something more editorial and less grand — the scale here is human, not monumental.
Barrio Santa Cruz — The old Jewish quarter. Narrow whitewashed streets, potted geraniums in doorways, hidden plazas that open suddenly from impossibly thin alleyways. Couples who are natural with each other, who like to walk and wander, always produce their best images here.
HOTEL ALFONSO XIII— If you are planning a proposal in Seville, this is the setting I would choose every time. Built for the king of Spain, it has a private tower with panoramic rooftop views over the city. A surprise proposal here, at golden hour, with Seville spread out below — it does not get better than that.
I also offer Super 8 video for Seville sessions — and the combination of medium format stills and Super 8 motion in thesecourtyards is something I haven't seen any other photographer offer in the south of Spain. The way the fountain light flickers on Super 8, the sound of footsteps on the tile — it adds a dimension that stills alone can't capture.
CASA DE PILATOS — Almost nobody talks about this one. A Renaissance palace with Mudéjar architecture, tranquil inner courtyards, and a garden that feels completely removed from the city outside. The tiled archways here have a graphic quality that looks extraordinary on film.
WHEN TO SHOOT IN SEVILLE
Spring (March to May) is my strong preference — orange blossom is in bloom, temperatures are perfect for comfortable shooting, and the evening light lingers beautifully. September and October are equally beautiful with a golden, harvest quality to the light. Summer is genuinely extreme in Seville (regularly 40°C+) — if you visit in summer I plan sessions exclusively at sunrise or within the last 45 minutes before sunset.

GRANADA — THE ALHAMBRA AND THE MAGIC OF ANDALUCIA
Two hours east of Seville, Granada is a completely different mood. Where Seville is warm and golden and extroverted, Granada is mysterious, layered and quietly extraordinary. The Alhambra Palace rises above the city like something from another world, and the Albaicín neighbourhood below it — whitewashed houses tumbling down narrow lanes, the Sierra Nevada glittering in the distance — feels like it has barely changed in five hundred years.
For couples who want something more dramatic, more atmospheric, and genuinely unlike anywhere else — Granada is your answer.
Why the Alhambra Changes Everything
I have photographed couples in front of many famous places in Europe. Nothing compares to the Alhambra as a backdrop. The geometric Moorish tilework, the horseshoe arches, the ornamental pools that reflect everything perfectly — it photographs like a painting, every single time.
One important thing to know: you cannot hold a ceremony or private session inside the Alhambra Palace itself (it is a protected UNESCO site with ticketed public access). But the surrounding area — the Generalife gardens, the Mirador de San Nicolás across the valley, the streets of the Albaicín — give you the Alhambra as a breathtaking backdrop without requiring special access.
My Favourite Engagement Locations in Granada
MIRADOR DE SAN NICOLAS — The most iconic view of the Alhambra. A small square in the Albaicín neighbourhood perched directly across from the palace. At golden hour, the light turns the Alhambra amber and the Sierra Nevada glows behind it. This is where I shoot when a couple wants one defining image.
THE ALBAICÍN STREETS— The Moorish quarter is a labyrinth of steep narrow lanes, whitewashed walls and wooden doorways that open onto unexpected gardens. Less iconic than the Mirador but more intimate — wandering here with a couple always produces the most natural, unguarded images. I shoot the Albaicín on Portra 400 and let the white walls and warm stone do everything. The light bouncing between the buildings creates a softness that's completely different from the structured drama of the Alhambra — and on film, the two locations in the same gallery give couples a range they don't expect.
GENERALIFE GARDENS — The summer palace gardens of the Nasrid kings. Fountains, cypress trees, rose beds and tiled water channels. The scale is peaceful and the light, when it filters through the cypress trees in the late afternoon, is extraordinary on film.
CHUMBERA VENUE — For couples planning an elopement or intimate ceremony in Granada, Chumbera offers a private terrace with unobstructed Alhambra views. I have shot elopements here and the combination of private setting and that backdrop is unlike anything else I have worked with.
Proposals in Granada
Granada is becoming one of the most sought-after cities in Spain for surprise proposals — and having photographed several here, I completely understand why. The Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset is the most common choice, and it never fails to deliver. If you want something more private, I can work with you to plan a proposal in the Generalife gardens or at a rooftop terrace with Alhambra views.
The key with Granada proposals is timing — the Mirador gets busy at golden hour with other visitors and local musicians. I know the rhythms of the square and exactly how to position you for maximum privacy while keeping the Alhambra fully in frame.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does an engagement session in Seville or Granada cost?
Sessions start from €800 plus travel from Barcelona. Travel is always quoted transparently upfront. For couples combining a session with a wedding booking in Andalusia, the session fee is discounted.
What's the best time of year for engagement photos in Seville?
March through May and September through November. Seville in summer is extremely hot — often above 40°C — which makes outdoor sessions difficult. Spring has the added magic of orange blossom season, when the entire city smells extraordinary. Autumn light is golden, warm, and the city is quieter.
Can you photograph a surprise proposal at the Alhambra? Not inside the Alhambra itself — it's a UNESCO site with strict ticketed access and no private photography permitted. But the Mirador de San Nicolás, the Generalife gardens, and several rooftop terraces in the Albaicín offer Alhambra views that are equally stunning and much more practical for a surprise. I've photographed several Granada proposals and know exactly how toplan them.
Do you offer Super 8 video in Seville and Granada? Yes — I'm the only photographer offering medium format film stills paired with Super 8 cinematic video in southern Spain. The combination is particularly powerful in Seville's courtyards and at sunset in Granada.
Do you also photograph weddings in Andalusia? Yes. I photograph destination weddings throughout the south of Spain — Seville, Granada, Marbella, Ronda, and beyond.
BOOKING A SESSION IN SOUTH OF SPAIN
I take on a small number of sessions in Andalucia each year, usually in spring and autumn when the conditions are best. If you're planning to be in Seville or Granada, reach out as early as you can — spring dates especially fill months ahead.I'm also available throughout the rest of Andalusia — Córdoba, Ronda, the Costa del Sol, and Marbella. For couples planning a wedding in the south, I offer the only medium format film and Super 8 video combination in the region.
