ELOPEMENT IN GRANADA — ALHAMBRA, LA CHUMBERA & THE ALBAICÍN
Melissa & Miguel — high school sweethearts who chose Granada on film
They met in high school. He's Spanish, she's American, and for years they made it work across the Atlantic — visits, phone calls, the patience that only people who are certain about each other can sustain. When it came time to marry, a big wedding was never the question. The question was where.
Granada was the only answer. The city where their story began in Spain. Not the obvious choice — not Barcelona, not the Amalfi Coast, not Santorini. Somewhere more personal, more layered, more theirs.
The morning started inside the Alhambra. Not a ceremony — you can't hold one inside the palace complex — but a private portrait session through the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife gardens before the crowds arrived. The light at that hour is extraordinary: cool and directional, filtered through carved stone screens and reflected off the still water of the courtyards. On Kodak Portra, the Alhambra becomes something almost unreal — the warmth of the stucco, the intricate geometry of the tile work, the deep green of the cypress gardens. These are some of the most beautiful frames I have ever shot.
The ceremony took place later that afternoon at La Chumbera — a private terrace high above the city with an unobstructed view of the Alhambra. Just the two of them, their closest people, vows exchanged with the palace glowing across the valley. La Chumbera is one of those rare venues where the backdrop is so extraordinary that simplicity is the only appropriate response. White flowers, a few chairs, the view. Nothing else needed.
Afterwards, a vintage car wound through the narrow streets of the Albaicín — whitewashed walls, jasmine, the sound of flamenco guitar drifting from somewhere unseen — and delivered them to a traditional Spanish restaurant for a private dinner. Wine, tapas, the kind of laughter that only happens when every person at the table knows the couple's full story.
I shot the entire day on Portra 400. Granada's light is different from anywhere else I photograph in Spain — less coastal, more amber, with a golden-hour quality that seems to last for hours in the narrow streets of the Albaicín. The Alhambra at sunrise on film, the ceremony at La Chumbera in late afternoon light, the vintage car winding through the old quarter at dusk — each moment had its own colour temperature, its own mood, and Portra held all of it with the warmth and honesty that only analog can give.

Granada is quietly becoming one of Spain's most sought-after elopement destinations, and having photographed here multiple times, I understand why. If you are considering Granada for your elopement — the Alhambra at sunrise, La Chumbera at sunset, a private dinner in the Albaicín — I know this city well enough to help you plan every detail.

Planning Your Alhambra Elopement: Venues & Logistics
Alhambra Palace Complex:
While you cannot hold a legal ceremony inside the Alhambra itself (it's a protected UNESCO site), the surrounding areas offer spectacular views of the palace. The Mirador de San Nicolás in the Albaicín neighborhood provides the most iconic Alhambra backdrop, while the Generalife gardens offer a more secluded, romantic atmosphere.
Chumbera Venue:
For couples seeking a private venue with unobstructed Alhambra views, Chumbera is Granada's hidden gem. This intimate terrace venue accommodates small elopements of 2-20 guests, with the Alhambra providing a stunning backdrop for your ceremony. The venue's outdoor space is perfect for sunset celebrations, romantic dinners, and champagne toasts with the illuminated palace glowing in the background.
Carmen de los Mártires:
Another exceptional venue offering Alhambra views and lush gardens perfect for intimate ceremonies. This 19th-century carmen (traditional Granada estate) features romantic gardens, fountains, and covered pavilions.
Best Time to Elope in Granada:
- Spring (April-May): Mild weather, blooming gardens, fewer tourists
- Fall (September-October):Golden light, comfortable temperatures, harvest season
- Winter (November-February): Snow-capped Sierra Nevada backdrop, very few tourists
- Summer: Hot but magical evening light; book sunrise sessions
Legal Requirements for Elopements in Spain:
International couples should work with a wedding planner familiar with Spanish marriage requirements. Many couples choose symbolic ceremonies in Granada followed by legal marriage in their home country for simplicity.
