INEYARD WEDDING AT HERDADE DO SOBROSO, PORTUGAL

Ana & James — from Australia to the Alentejo, on Kodak Portra

They waited years for this. Ana and James had planned, postponed, replanned, and postponed again — the kind of long-distance patience that only people who are absolutely sure about each other can sustain. When the world finally opened, they didn't settle for somewhere easy. They chose the Alentejo — the vast, golden, unhurried south of Portugal — and a venue that feels like the end of the earth in the best possible way.

Herdade do Sobroso is a 1,600-hectare wine estate in Vidigueira, about two hours south of Lisbon. That number — 1,600 hectares — is almost impossible to picture until you're standing on the terrace and the vineyards stretch to the horizon in every direction, broken only by cork oaks and olive trees and the faint blue line of the Serra do Mendro in the distance. The estate has its own winery, its own restaurant, its own salt-water pool overlooking the hills. It is the kind of place where time genuinely slows down, and your phone feels irrelevant, and the only thing that matters is what's right in front of you.

Ana and James gathered 50 of their closest people here and built a day around exactly that feeling. The ceremony took place in the vineyards — no grand arch, no elaborate staging, just rows of vines and the Alentejo sun and two people who had crossed the world to stand in this spot. It was emotional in the way that only long-awaited things can be. The guests knew the story. The tears were real.

I shot the whole day on Portra 400 and the Alentejo did not disappoint. The light here is nothing like Barcelona or the coast — it's drier, warmer, more amber, with a golden quality that starts early and deepens all afternoon until the whole landscape looks like it was dipped in honey. Portra handles this with a richness that made every frame — the ceremony in the vines, the couple walking between the rows at golden hour, the candlelit dinner on the terrace — feel like it already belonged in a family album from another decade. The grain, the warmth, the softness in the shadows. Portugal on film is something I want to photograph again and again.

Dinner was served outside, long tables on the terrace, the estate's own wine poured generously, the conversation easy, the stars appearing one by one above the vineyards. By the time the dancing started, the evening had that particular quality of warmth and exhaustion and joy that only happens when the day has been exactly right.

If you are planning a destination wedding in Portugal — at Herdade do Sobroso or anywhere in the Alentejo — I travel from Barcelona regularly and would love to photograph your day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Weddings in Portugal

How much does a destination wedding photographer cost in Portugal?

Destination wedding photography in Portugal typically ranges from €2,800 to €6,000, depending on coverage hours, whether the photographer shoots on film, and whether a second photographer is included. My collections for Portugal weddings start at €3,800 and include a full day of coverage with a blend of medium format film and digital photography, a pre-wedding consultation, and a beautifully curated online gallery. Travel from Barcelona is included in all Portugal collections.

Can I hire a wedding photographer from Barcelona for my Portugal wedding?

Absolutely. I am based in Barcelona and travel to Portugal regularly for destination weddings throughout the year. Lisbon, Sintra, Alentejo, and the Algarve are all easily accessible — Lisbon is just over an hour by flight. Being based in Spain also means I am familiar with the southern European light, landscape, and rhythm of celebration, which translates naturally to working in Portugal. Many of my couples plan weddings across both countries.

What makes Herdade do Sobroso a good venue for a vineyard wedding?

Herdade do Sobroso is a 1,600-hectare working winery and boutique hotel in Vidigueira, in the heart of the Alentejo wine region. It offers panoramic vineyard views, open-air ceremony spaces among the vines, an on-site restaurant serving traditional Alentejo cuisine, and boutique accommodation for guests. The estate is intimate enough for a gathering of 30–80, yet large enough to feel like a private countryside retreat. It is one of the most photogenic vineyard wedding venues in Portugal — the combination of golden light, green vines, and rustic stone architecture creates an incredible backdrop for film photography.

Is Alentejo a good region for a destination wedding in Portugal?

Alentejo is one of Portugal’s most beautiful and underrated wedding destinations. It is the country’s largest wine-producing region, with a landscape of rolling vineyards, cork oak forests, and endless golden plains. Unlike the Algarve or Lisbon, Alentejo has a quieter, slower pace that feels deeply romantic and personal. The light here is exceptional — warm and golden for most of the day, with some of the most stunning sunsets in Portugal. The best months for an Alentejo wedding are May, June, September, and October, when temperatures are warm but comfortable for outdoor celebrations.

Do you photograph weddings on film in Portugal?

Yes. I photograph all my weddings using a combination of medium format film and digital cameras. Film gives the images a soft, luminous quality with rich tones and beautiful skin rendering that is especially stunning in the golden Portuguese light. I shoot on Kodak Portra and Ilford Delta, developed by Carmencita Film Lab in Valencia. The result is a gallery that feels timeless and warm — images that look as beautiful in ten years as they do today.

What other wedding locations do you cover in Portugal?

While this gallery features a vineyard wedding in Alentejo, I photograph destination weddings across all of Portugal. Popular locations with my couples include Sintra and its fairytale palaces, the historic tiles and light of Lisbon, the dramatic cliffs of the Algarve, the Douro Valley wine region in the north, and the vibrant city of Porto. Each region has its own character and light, and I am happy to advise on venues and planning if you are still choosing your location.

How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer for Portugal?

For peak season weddings in Portugal (May through October), I recommend booking 9–12 months in advance. My calendar fills up quickly for summer and early autumn, especially for vineyard weddings in Alentejo and the Douro Valley. For off-season or weekday weddings, 4–6 months is usually sufficient. If you have a date in mind, get in touch early — even if you are still finalising your venue, I can hold a tentative date while you plan.
