French Riviera Engagement Photographer — Eze, Villefranche & Côte d'Azur Film Photography
The French Riviera Was Made to Be Photographed on Film
There is a reason Grace Kelly chose the Côte d'Azur. There is a reason every great love story set in Europe eventually finds its way here — to the hilltop villages draped in bougainvillea, the impossibly blue harbours, the light that turns golden three hours before sunset and stays that way until the sea goes dark.
The French Riviera is one of the most romantic and visually extraordinary places on earth. And on analog film, it looks like nothing else.
I am Olya Kobruseva, a fine art film photographer based in Barcelona, specialising in destination engagement and elopement photography across the Mediterranean. I travel regularly to the French Riviera for private sessions — from the ancient village of Eze perched above the sea, to the colourful port of Villefranche-sur-Mer, to the quiet clifftop streets of La Turbie above Monaco. Every photograph is shot on analog film. No digital cameras. No shortcuts.
If you are planning an engagement session, elopement, or honeymoon shoot on the Côte d'Azur — this is what it can look like.
A Grace Kelly Love Story — La Turbie, Eze & Villefranche-sur-Mer
This session began in La Turbie — the tiny, extraordinary village that sits directly above Monaco on the Grande Corniche road. Few tourists make it up here. The streets are narrow and quiet, the café terraces look out over the principality below, and the light in the morning is unlike anything you will find on the coast.
Lan arrived in a dress she had spent months searching for — a silhouette pulled directly from Grace Kelly's wardrobe in High Society and To Catch a Thief. Every piece of her outfit was chosen deliberately, referencing the actress who became Monaco's princess and whose elegance defined what the French Riviera meant to the world. On film, in that light, in those streets — it was exactly that.
From La Turbie we moved down to Eze village — one of the most spectacular hilltop villages in all of Europe, its stone facades rising from a clifftop 400 metres above the Mediterranean. The views from Eze are panoramic and breathtaking. The light there in the late morning is soft and warm, bouncing off pale stone walls in a way that film renders beautifully.
We finished the session at the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer — the pastel-coloured harbour town just east of Nice, where fishing boats bob against a backdrop of apricot and ochre buildings and the sea is the deepest, clearest blue of anywhere on the coast.
Three locations. One day. Entirely on film.
Why Shoot Your French Riviera Engagement on Analog Film?
Film and the Côte d'Azur were made for each other. The warm tones, the Mediterranean light, the faded elegance of the Riviera villages — analog captures all of it in a way that feels timeless rather than contemporary. These photographs do not look like they were taken yesterday. They look like they belong to another era entirely. Like something from the personal archive of someone who lived beautifully.
Every frame of this session — and every session I shoot — is captured on 35mm or medium format analog film. There is no digital backup, no instant preview, no shooting 400 frames to find three good ones. Film demands intention. Every moment is considered before the shutter opens. You feel that in the final photographs — a stillness and presence that digital photography rarely achieves.
The French Riviera has its own visual language. It has been photographed by the greatest photographers of the 20th century. When you shoot here on film, you are working in that same tradition. The grain, the colour, the light — it all belongs together.
The Best Locations for an Engagement Session on the French Riviera
The Côte d'Azur offers an extraordinary range of settings for engagement photography. These are the locations I return to again and again:
EZE VILLAGE — perched 400 metres above the sea on a dramatic clifftop, Eze offers ancient stone streets, panoramic Mediterranean views, and the legendary Château Eza terrace where champagne at sunset feels like a scene from a film. One of the most romantic locations in all of Europe.
LA TURBIE — the hidden gem above Monaco. Quieter than Eze, less visited, with incredible light and the principality spread out below. Perfect for morning sessions.
VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER — the most beautiful harbour on the Riviera. Pastel buildings, colourful fishing boats, crystalline water. Ideal for late morning or golden hour.
NICE OLD TOWN — the Baroque architecture, the flower market, the ochre and terracotta facades. A rich, textured backdrop that photographs magnificently on film.
CAP FERRAT — the most exclusive peninsula on the coast, with hidden coves, grand villas, and extraordinary sea light. Perfect for couples who want privacy and drama.
I plan every session around your dates, the light, and what resonates most with you as a couple. Get in touch and we will design your perfect Riviera day together.
Planning an Elopement or Proposal on the French Riviera?
The Côte d'Azur is one of the most requested elopement destinations in Europe — and for good reason. Civil ceremonies in small French mairies, private villa gardens, clifftop viewpoints above the Mediterranean — the settings are extraordinary and the logistics, with the right planning, are straightforward.
I work with couples planning intimate elopements and surprise proposals across the French Riviera regularly. Whether you want to exchange vows privately above Monaco, propose on a terrace overlooking the sea at Eze, or simply mark a moment in the most beautiful place you have ever been — I would love to document it on film.
Sessions and elopements on the French Riviera start from €850, including full session planning, location guidance, and a complete analog film gallery delivered digitally. Travel is included for longer bookings.
Get in touch early — summer dates on the Riviera book out fast, and the best light windows require advance planning.
