Saint-Tropez is not simply beautiful. It is cinematic — the kind of light, colour, and atmosphere that belongs on film. The pastel facades of the Old Town at golden hour. The Dior garden in afternoon shade. A yacht-lined port, a glass of rosé, the scent of lavender carried in from the hills. This is where I come to photograph couples who want more than a photoshoot — they want a day to remember, captured exactly as it felt.
I'm Olya Kobruseva, a fine art film photographer based in Barcelona. I travel to the French Riviera regularly throughout summer and early autumn to photograph honeymoon sessions, anniversary portraits, and intimate elopements. Every session is shot on medium format analog film — Kodak Portra, processed by Carmencita Film Lab — giving your images a warmth and timelessness that no digital filter can replicate.
If you are planning a honeymoon, a milestone anniversary, or simply a beautiful couple session in Saint-Tropez, I have limited availability. I would love to hear about your trip.
A Honeymoon Session in the Streets of Saint-Tropez
Lan and Jason had chosen Saint-Tropez for their anniversary — a private ritual of theirs, returning each year to a new place and commissioning an analog portrait of their love at that moment in time. When they chose the French Riviera, I understood immediately why.
We began in the early morning, when the port is still quiet and the golden Provençal light falls at an angle that makes everything feel like a still from a 1960s film. The cobbled streets of the Old Town, the weathered pastel facades, the flowering bougainvillea — all of it unfolds naturally when you move slowly and let the place come to you. I do not pose couples. I walk with them, I direct them gently, and I wait for the moments that happen in between instructions — the laughter, the glance, the hand reaching instinctively for the other's.
For Lan and Jason, those moments came constantly. They are a couple at ease in the world and in each other, and that ease translated into images that feel both effortlessly intimate and genuinely cinematic.
The Dior Café des Lices — Where Luxury Meets the Light
The Café des Lices — nestled in the garden of the Dior boutique at Place des Lices — is one of those rare places where luxury feels effortless rather than performed. The dappled afternoon light through the plane trees, the elegant wrought-iron furniture, the scent of fresh flowers: it is a setting that belongs on film.
For couples who want their session to include something iconic and unmistakably Saint-Tropez, this is my first recommendation. It is also, conveniently, where the light is at its most extraordinary in the late afternoon — the golden hour in Provence is not the same as anywhere else in Europe. It is warmer, more saturated, and it falls at an angle that wraps around a face in a way I have never encountered anywhere else.
If you are planning your session and wondering how to structure your afternoon: begin here, in the shade of the Dior garden. We will find our way from there.
After the Dior garden, we moved through the quieter streets behind Place des Lices — the part of Saint-Tropez that most visitors never find. No crowds, no noise. Just sun-warmed stone, blue shutters, and the kind of afternoon light that makes everything feel unhurried. This is where the most intimate moments of a session happen — not in front of a landmark, but in between them.
Why Film Photography Belongs on the French Riviera
There is a reason the most celebrated photographers of the mid-century shot the French Riviera on film. The light here is not just beautiful — it is the kind of light that film was designed for. Kodak Portra responds to the warm Mediterranean sun the way no digital sensor can: rendering skin tones with a softness, a depth, and a grain that feels alive rather than processed.
All of my couple sessions in Saint-Tropez are photographed on medium format analog film. I use Kodak Portra 400 and 800, developed by Carmencita Film Lab in Valencia — a collaboration that ensures every roll is processed to the highest standard. The resulting images have a warmth and timelessness that cannot be manufactured in post-production. They do not look edited. They look like memories.
This approach has been recognised and featured by Wedding Sparrow, one of the world's leading fine art wedding publications. It is also the reason clients travel from the United States, Australia, and across Europe to work with me — they want images that will look as beautiful in thirty years as they do today.
Planning Your Saint-Tropez Photography Session
Best Time of Year: Saint-Tropez is beautiful from May through October, but my personal favourite months for photography are May–June and September–October. The light is softer, the streets are quieter, and the colours of the Riviera are at their most vivid without the intense midday heat of July and August. That said, summer sessions are magical too — particularly when we begin at golden hour, roughly 7–8pm in peak season.
Best Locations for Couple Photography in Saint-Tropez:
The Old Port (Vieux-Port) — morning light, reflections on the water, the scale of the yachts
Place des Lices and the surrounding streets — dappled shade, pétanque players, market days
The Citadelle — elevated views over the Gulf, stone archways, fewer tourists
Café Dior des Lices — private garden setting, afternoon golden light
Plage des Graniers — a quieter beach 10 minutes from the centre, extraordinary sunset light
The winding streets of La Ponche — the oldest quarter of Saint-Tropez, entirely free of cars
Session Length and Structure: Most couple sessions in Saint-Tropez last 2–3 hours, beginning at sunrise or 2-3 before sunset. This gives us time to move between 2–3 locations and captures both the warm afternoon light and the magic of golden hour. I provide a detailed session guide upon booking, including location suggestions, what to wear, and how to plan your afternoon.
Travel: I am based in Barcelona and travel to the French Riviera regularly throughout summer. Saint-Tropez is accessible by ferry from Nice or Toulon, or by car from Nice (approximately 1.5 hours). I am happy to coordinate your session date with your travel itinerary.
